Researchers have previously observed inadequate parenting of parents who have children with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder. A research group through multiple universities explored the family structure and daily routines as related to the children’s symptoms of ADHD. Researchers found that the household chaos had an adverse effect on the emotional climate in the house.
Parents do not always handle ADHD properly.
A study of 84 children, 31 with ADHD and 53 in the control group, assessed parental behavior using a standardized questionnaire, which asked to what extent the parents looked after their children, praised or criticized them, how consistent they were in their parenting and whether they resorted to physical punishment. The results showed that parents of children with ADHD criticize their children more often and reported more household chaos than the parents of the children in the control group.
