One of the common misconceptions about dyslexia is that dyslexics see backwards. Instead, their major problem has more to do with spelling. Because of misconceptions like this, parents need support groups to help sort through their feelings and frustrations. In British Columbia, Cathy McMillan is starting a branch of Decoding Dyslexia, a support group for parents with dyslexic children that started in New Jersey three years ago.
According to McMillan, in British Colombia 20% of students are in special education in schools, and of that 20%, 80% are dyslexic. However, only about one-to-three percent have reported to their ministry as having a learning disability to recieve support from the school system. As such, McMillan is attempting to bring awareness to the public and show that there is support for children and parents struggling with Dyslexia.
