School districts in Hampton Roads, Virgina say they don’t screen for dyslexia (a language-based disorder which results in a person having difficulties with language skills such as reading, spelling and writing, even though the person might be highly intelligent.) nor do they track it. One in five children in the US has dyslexia and early diagnosis and intervention is critical. While there is no “dyslexia” category under the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act, dyslexia is an issue that the state started to seriously address just two years ago.
