In recent years, there has been a call for more action from the government to support the specific needs of dyslexic children. Many parents, educators, and dyslexic individuals are fighting to prove that dyslexia, just like autism and other learning disabilities, should be given the needed support or appropriations. Unfortunately, the fight continues: last April, the Senate defeated Senator Bill Cassidy’s proposed amendment to the ESEA/No Child Left Behind Act, which would have provided funding specifically for children with dyslexia.
Because of the ESEA NCLB Act’s historical failure to specifically mention dyslexia, millions of children with this neurological disorder have not received the support and services they so urgently need. Senator Cassidy, however, stands by his belief that there should be distinctions among different disabilities in order to help them appropriately, just like in the case of dyslexia. Whether or not those distinctions will eventually be granted remains to be seen.
