After a recent 18-month study by a school in Devon, England, researchers from an independent optometrist school have proposed a different take on what they think causes dyslexia. While most people believe that dyslexia originates from the brain, the Devon study proposes that it is actually based on mismatched eye muscles.

By using specially designed corrective glasses, researchers from the independent optometrist group SchoolVision UK found that pupils identified as dyslexic could double their reading speed. Professor Barbara Pierscionek, a specialist in eye and vision research said: “A proper investigation and the correct treatment, which is not expensive, can transform the life of a child as their scholastic and academic performance improves vastly and rapidly.”

Special glasses are being made to assist in dyslexia.

So given this new information, how can we combat dyslexia? Researchers think we will find the answer in specially designed corrective glasses. In fact, they believe that when using these glasses, students with dyslexia can double their reading time. On average, dyslexics who tested with bespoke glasses saw a 30% increase in their reading speed.
