While dyslexia can hinder an individual from joining the armed forces, the recruitment system does try to help individuals overcome mental issues which would disqualify them from joining. Moreover, there are other qualifications which the applicant must meet in order to be eligible, such as passing the military’s standard test, the ASVAB.
In order to pass the ASVAB, however, applicants need not score exceptionally high. While the Coast Guard requires a slightly higher score than the Army and National Guard, the minimum mark is very doable. Moreover, GED and college credits can also help dyslexic applicants overcome their inherent obstacles. Although dyslexia is taken very serious in military recruitment due to the motor and mental skills required in battle, steps are taken to help those with dyslexia join the army if this is his/her passion.
