Lola Alvarez is a special education paraprofessional who has three sons, each with learning challenges; and she herself has dyslexia. Lola says that in the Hispanic culture, there is a stigma associated with learning challenges—people don’t want others to think their child is dumb. It’s just something that is not discussed.
After meeting her husband, she was reluctant to tell him she was dyslexic because she was embarrassed. In fact, she didn’t tell her husband she was dyslexic until she saw signs of her youngest son being dyslexic. Lola says that finally telling her husband about her dyslexia was very liberating. She now has a goal to help remove the stigma associated with learning difficulties in the Hispanic community.
