Reinforcing reading aloud and encouraging family reading was accomplished at District 146’s district-wide family reading affair. Reading aloud benefits include improved reading comprehension, an enlarged vocabulary and creates a positive mindset in regards to reading. 2017’s chosen book for each child in the district to receive was The Trumpet of the Swan.
Weekly family activities were arranged during the event ranging from selfies to origami. The feedback provided by the participants was quite favorable. Other schools noticing the success at Fulton adapted the program One School, One Book and experienced similar success. All districts were able to participate in the program due to PTO/PTA, Board of Education, and the support of community affiliates.
One District, One Book provides a wonderful experience for families to enjoy the same book together,” said Michelle Smith, Reading Specialist at Memorial School. “Reading aloud can help students improve reading comprehension, increase vocabulary, and create positive attitudes towards reading.
