A blogger discusses her experiences with trying to homeschool her son. Her son started acting up at age seven, and was physically fighting with his mom on attending school. She described her messed up hair and scratches on her arms. After two more years of regular schooling had passed, the mother decided to take her son out of school and tried to home educate him, along with a younger brother.
Tears streaming down my son’s face and mine, I realized I had to find another way, not just to help him learn but to help our entire family find some semblance of peace.
Her first year of homeschooling was terrible. She tried to replicate the environment in school, and even had a bell. Her son continued to resist her, as did his brother. The next year she had the kids tested and found they had learning disorders. This year was also unsuccessful. In the third year she tried a new strategy. She dispensed with traditional work and tried to teach skills for coping and living. She let the kids explore what they wanted to learn and she added physical activity as breaks in the routine. One son learned how to build a computer and she rewarded them. She reports that the kids are happier.
