Allendale Elementary School in Oakland, California is not your typical school. In addition to teaching students in transitional kindergarten thru fifth grade, Allendale helps many segments of the community that are under-served. There are ESL classes along with a developmental playgroup where children and their caregivers can be heard singing in English and Spanish. In addition, the sight of infants and toddlers in its halls is not unusual. That is because there are programs that cater to small children not old enough for transitional kindergarten.
To make many of these programs possible, Allendale partners with Lotus Bloom which is a family resource center. This partnership is responsible for the developmental playgroups that take place at the school that young children can participate in. Charles Miller, the principal, is very proud of the variety of programs offered. He believes that investing in children from infancy benefits not only the children but the community as well because small children can go into school with the tools they need to be successful students. According to Miller, “We want all of them to start with a foundation that’s going to help them be successful.”
In addition to serving elementary school students, from transitional kindergarten through fifth grade, Principal Miller believes that serving the infants and toddlers in this community is part of his job.
