The digital age has changed so much for our society and how we read is no different. A recent New York Times article highlighted that the E-reader is not as developed as the standard paper reader. The article cited that E-reading hindered the student’s reading skills but the article failed to address strategies to implement in the E-reading process.

“However, the examples highlighted in the article focus on the content — comparing traditional, paper-based books to electronic versions with a high level of interactivity such as games and video — rather than addressing the skills and strategies implemented in the reading process.”

Beth Holland, instructor at EDTechTeacher, suggested a summer reading challenge to overcome these obstacles and help develop the students’ skills. Use tools such as Evernotte Web Clipper or PDF annotation apps to highlight or add comments to what you’re reading. Most importantly, how you read is more critical than what you read.
Students now have the potential to customize their reading experiences with mobile devices. So this summer, instead of reading in whatever manner you would traditionally use, I’d like to suggest three digital reading challenges.

Reading in a web browser makes it difficult to interact with the material.
2
Downloading PDF documents before reading gives you many tools to manipulate the text.
3
You can still take notes and highlight while reading eBooks. However, now you can upload and share your notes through the cloud.
